“My child, how sweet you are.”
φέρε σε φιλήσω.
“Come, I’ll kiss you.”
γλυκὺ γὰρ τὸ τῆς μητρὸς φίλημα.
“For your mother’s kiss is sweet.”
γλυκεῖα δὲ καὶ ἡ μήτηρ·
“Your mother is sweet too;”
ἀλλ’ οὐ γλυκὺν ἔχεις τὸν πατέρα, ἀλλ’ ἀμελῆ.
“but you do not have a sweet father, but an uncaring one.”
ἐγὼ δὲ μέμφομαι τῷ σῷ πατρὶ ἀμελεῖ ὄντι.
“I find fault with your father since he’s uncaring.”
ὦ τέκνον, ὡς δυστυχὴς φαίνῃ ὢν διὰ τὸν πατέρα.
“Child, how unlucky you appear to be because of your father.”
ΚΙΝΕΣΙΑΣ (angrily) ἀλλὰ σὺ τὸν ἄνδρα ἀμελῆ καλεῖς;
KINESIAS “But do you call your husband uncaring?”
οὐδεμία μὲν γάρ ἐστι σοῦ ἀμελεστέρα, οὐδεὶς δὲ δυστυχέστερος ἐμοῦ.
“For there’s no one more uncaring than you and no one more unlucky than me.”
(προσάγων τῇ γυναικὶ τὴν χεῖρα, λέγει.)
(Stretching out his hand to his wife, he speaks.)
τί βουλομένη, ὦ πονηρά, ταῦτα ποιεῖς, γυναιξὶ πιθομένη τοιαύταις;
“What is it that you want, you bad woman, that you do these things, obeying such women?”
ΜΥ. (brushing aside his advances) παῦσαι κάκιστε, καὶ μὴ πρόσαγε τὴν χεῖρά μοι.
MYR. “Stop, vilest of men, and don’t stretch out your hand to me.”
ΚΙΝ. (pleading) οἴκαδε δ’ οὐ βαδιῇ πάλιν;
KIN. “Won’t you go back home?”
ΜΥ. (firmly) μὰ Δί’ οὐκ ἔγωγε οἴκαδε βαδιοῦμαι.
MYR. “By Zeus, I won’t go home.”
ἀλλὰ πρότερον τοὺς ἄνδρας δεῖ, τοῦ πολέμου παυσαμένους, σπονδὰς ποιεῖσθαι.
“Before (I do) the men must cease from war and make a treaty.”
ποιήσατε ταῦτα;
“Will you do this?”
ΚΙΝ. σὺ δὲ τί οὐ κατακλίνῃ μετ’ ἐμοῦ ὀλίγον χρόνον;
KIN. “Why won’t you lie down with me for a short time?”
ΜΥ. οὐ δῆτα· καίτοι σ’ οὐκ ἐρῶ γ’ ὡς οὐ φιλῶ.
MYR. “No. And yet I won’t say that I don’t love you.”
ΚΙΝ. φιλεις; τί οὖν κατακλίνῃ;
KIN. “You love me?” “So why don’t you lie down?”
ΜΥ. ὦ καταγέλαστε, ἐναντίον τοῦ παιδίου;
MYR. “You silly fellow, in front of the baby?”
ΚΙΝ. (turning to the slave) μὰ Δί’, ἀλλὰ τοῦτο γ’ οἴκαδε, ὦ Μανῆ, φέρε.
KIN. “[You’re right] by Zeus.” “Manes, take the baby home.”
(ὁ θεράπων, ὃς τὸ παιδίον φέρει, οἴκαδε ἀπέρχεται.)
(The servant, who is carrying the baby, goes off home.)
ἰδοὺ, τὸ μέν σοι παιδίον καὶ δὴ ἐκποδών, σὺ δ’ οὐ κατακλίνῃ;
“Look, the baby is out of the way, so won’t you lie down?”
ΜΥ. ἀλλὰ ποῦ γὰρ ἄν τις δράσειε τοῦτο;
MYR. “But where should one do this?”
πρῶτον γὰρ δεῖ μ’ ἐνεγκεῖν κλινίδιον.
“For first I must bring a little couch.”
ΚΙΝ. μηδαμῶς, ἐπειδὴ ἔξεστιν ἡμῖν χαμαὶ κατακλίνεσθαι.
KIN. “Not at all, since it is possible for us to lie down on the ground.”
ΜΥ. (firmly) μὰ τὸν Ἀπόλλω, οὐκ ἐάσω σ’ ἐγὼ, καίπερ τοιοῦτον ὄντα, κατακλίνεσθαι χαμαί.
MYR. “By Apollo, I won’t allow you to lie down on the ground despite the state you’re in.”
(ἐξέρχεται.)
(She goes out.)
ΚΙΝ. (joyfully) ὢ τῆς εὐτυχίας·
KIN. “Oh, what good luck!”
ἥ τοι γυνὴ φιλοῦσά με δήλη ἐστίν.
“It’s clear that my wife loves me.”
