I. Basics
1. What are the features of Candida albicans (yeast)?
- Member of the normal flora in oral cavity, GI, vagina
- Candida infection in patients with normal immunity→ oral sore
- Candida infection in patients with immunodeficiency → oral candidiasis, oesophagitis
II. Oral candidiasis
1. What are the 3 main types of Oral candidiasis?
- Acute pseudomembranous candidiasis (thrush)
- Erythematous candidosis
- Chronic hyperplastic candidosis (oral leukoplakia)

2. What are the features of Acute pseudomembranous candidosis (thrush)?
- White raised lesions on buccal mucosa, gums, or tongue
- In infants, elderly, HIV infected, diabetic, cancer patient

3. What are the features of Erythematous candidosis?
- atrophic candidosis: antibiotic stomatitis
- chronic atrophic candidosis: denture stomatitis

4. What are the features of Chronic hyperplastic candidosis (oral leukoplakia)?
premalignant, translucent or dense, opaque white plaques on cheeks, tongue
III. Angular cheilitis
1. What are the features of Angular cheilitis?
- Soreness, erythema and fissuring at corners of mouth
- Associated with ill-fitting dentures
- Caused by irritation or fungi (candida albicans and staph. Aureus)
- 20% of HIV infected patients
IV. Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis
1. What is Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis?
oral manifestation of candidosis in patients with congenital immunological or endocrinological disorders
