Prepositions of place Flashcards
In this unit we will look at the prepositions “di, a, da” and “in”. These prepositions can be used to talk about places, and they always go before the noun that refers to a place.

Martino vive in Italia. (Martino lives in Italy.)
(Martino lives in Italy.)
Voi andate in vacanza a Cuba?
(Are you going on holiday to Cuba?)
Giacomo e Davide sono di Palermo.
(Giacomo and Davide are from Palermo.)
We use “in” with continents, nations and regions

while “a” usually goes before names of cities and islands.

Careful though: Sicily and Sardinia (the two main Italian islands) take the preposition “in”.

Normally when we talk about our home we use the preposition “a”:

“Ciao, vado a casa.”
bye im going home
Giacomo e Davide sono a casa.
(Giacomo and Davide are home.)
il gatto è in casa o in giardino?
(Is the cat in the house or in the garden?)
“Di” and “da” indicate the origins of something or someone, and where someone or something is from, but they are used with different structures:

- essere + DI + city: Loro sono di Londra.
(They are from London.)
- venire + DA (with article) + nation: Vengono dalla Francia.
(They come from France.)
- venire + DA (without article) + city: Noi veniamo da Barcellona.
(We come from Barcelona.)
