Q

What are the general side effects of anticholinesterase or organophosphate OD? How do you treat?

A

DUMBBELSS - diarrhea, urination, miosis, bronchospasm, bradycardia, excitation at muscles and CNS, lacrimation, sweating, salivation

pralidoxine if immediate (regenerate cholinesterase)
atropine - competitive inhibitor (can help everything except excitation)

Q

What are the general side effects of atropine OD?

A

Inc body temp (not sweating b/c Ach - hot as a hare)

Dry mouth and skin (dry as a bone)

Flushing (red as a beet)

Cycloplegia (paralysis of ciliary muscle so cannot accommodate - blind as a bat)

Disorientation (mad as a hatter)

+ constipation
+ acute angle gluacoma from dilation of pupil in elderly
+ urinary retention if BPH
+ hyperthermia in infants
