Autonomic Basics Flashcards
Alpha 1
Vasoconstriction
Contract pupil dilator (mydriasis - dilation)
Contract intestine and bladder sphincter muscles (do not want to poop or pee in emergency)
Alpha 2
NEG FEEDBACK - at presynapse of adrenergics
Dec insulin release, dec lipolysis, dec aqueous humor production
Inc platelet aggregation
Beta 1
ONE HEART
Inc HR, inc contractility
Inc renin release
Inc lipolysis
Beta 2
TWO LUNGS
Vasodilation
Bronchodilation
Uterine relaxation (dec tone)
Ciliary muscle relaxes (flat lens)
Inc aqueous humor, insulin and lipolysis
Beta 3
Inc lipolysis
Inc thermogenesis in skeletal muscle
Inc bladder relaxation
M1
Higher cognition and stimulates enteric nervous system
M2
Dec HR and contractility of atria
M3
SECRETIONS (lacrimal, sweat, salivary, gastric acid)
Gut peristalsis and bladder contraction
Inc insulin release
Bronchoconstriction
Pinpoint pupil - contract pupil sphincter (miosis)
Contract ciliary muscle - accommodation
What are the general side effects of anticholinesterase or organophosphate OD? How do you treat?
DUMBBELSS - diarrhea, urination, miosis, bronchospasm, bradycardia, excitation at muscles and CNS, lacrimation, sweating, salivation
pralidoxine if immediate (regenerate cholinesterase)
atropine - competitive inhibitor (can help everything except excitation)
What are the general side effects of atropine OD?
Inc body temp (not sweating b/c Ach - hot as a hare)
Dry mouth and skin (dry as a bone)
Flushing (red as a beet)
Cycloplegia (paralysis of ciliary muscle so cannot accommodate - blind as a bat)
Disorientation (mad as a hatter)
+ constipation
+ acute angle gluacoma from dilation of pupil in elderly
+ urinary retention if BPH
+ hyperthermia in infants
