1: involves basal epithelial layers
2: involves up to 2/3 of vaginal epithelium
3: involves most of vaginal epithelium (carcinoma in situ)
who does VAIN affect?
women over 50
where is VAIN most commonly located?
upper 1/3 of vagina
what is VAIN associated with?
HPV
what are the symptoms of VAIN?
asymptomatic until accidental discovery (PALPATION)
- postcoital spotting or vaginal discharge
patients who undergo hysterectomy for CIN may develop _________.
VAIN III
- yearly pap after hysterectomy
how is VAIN diagnosed?
colposcopy and biopsy
*PERSEVERE vaginal depth
what is the treatment for VAIN?
low grade:
high grade:
low: surveillance
high: excision to prevent progression to SCC of the vagina
what is the follow up for VAIN?
- clinical exam every 6 months x 2 years, then annually
- Cytology + HPV
