What is the etiology?
A
- Inflammation
- Trauma
*pressure on elbow (at rest on firm surfaces) - Infection
- Gout, RA, septic bursitis

What is the presentation of olecranon bursitis
A
- Swelling
- Pain
- Heat
*abrupt “goose egg”

What will be found on the PE?
A
- Mass over olecranon
- Decreased ROM with flexion
*due to the tightness around elbow - Erythema
- Warmth
- Chronic is less tender, less red and warm

What are the diagnostic tests?
A
- Aspiration
*WBC
*crystals
*gram stain
* C&S - Radiographs (if trauma or fracture)
- MRI (maybe)

What is the treatment of olecranon bursitis?
A
- Aspiration (with cortisone if no infection)
*no CI increases the risk of it filling up - NSAIDs
- Elbow pads, no resting on hard/firm surfaces
- Compression

When would surgery be indicated
A
- If there is recurrence
*will be increase risk of infection - Cosmetic purposes

What is the treatment for septic bursitis?
A
- Aspiration and antibiotics
*surgical excision is recommended treatment and antibiotics
