What causes a bakers cysts
A
- No know definite cause
- Occurs when an effusion is present as with an injury or arthritis

Where will the swelling of a bakers cyst be present?
A
- In the popliteal space/posterior knee
- Between the medial head of the gastrocnemius and semimembranosus muscles posterior to the medial femoral condyle

How will a patient present with a bakers cyst? (PE)
A
- Pain (with standing, full flexion, and extension)
- Posterior knee swelling or feeling of fullness (flexion “can’t bend knee”)
- Complaints of stiffness/decreased flexion
**Cysts may be visualized when standing behind the patient

Q
What labs to order>
A
- MRI
*will fully evaluate the mass
*with arthrogram (inject in the front of the knee) - Ultrasound

Q
What are the complications?
A
- May rupture and cause acute posterior knee and calf pain
- (Rarely) compress blood vessels and cause DVT

Q
Will the cyst reoccur?
A
- Yes unless the underlying cause is corrected

Q
What is the treatment?
A
- Usually nothing unless symptomatic
- Compression
- NSAIDS
- Aspirations/ with cortisone (helps with inflammation)
- Surgery
