What are the differences between impairment, disability, and handicap
I: anatomical or physiological dysfunction
D: Unable to perform a human activity
H: unable to meet a societal role
What happens during a functional capacity evaluation?
Tests the patients ability on what they can and cannot do
What are the steps to physical rehabilitation?
- ROM
-Streching
-Passive low-load stretching
-AROM - Isometric exercises
- gradual initiation of strengthening with increasing ROM
What is active assist ROM?
ROM primarily by patient with some assistance by another or with machines
What is the definition of closed-chain kinetic exercises?
Distal portion of limb being exercised is in contact with something else/final resistance/cannot move
EX: squats, legs press
What is the definition of open-chain kinetic exercises?
Distal portion of limb being exercised is free to move
EX: Bicep curls, leg extensions
What are the phases to sport oriented rehabilitation?
- Initial
- Functional
- Sport-Specific
- Graduated return to play
When should functional rehab start?
Not until FROM/ muscle strength, strength, and endurance are restored
What is Physical medicine and rehabilitation?
Branch of medicine emphasizing prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders- particularly related to nerves, muscles, and bones that may produce temporary or permanent impairment”
