What does CTS involve?
A
- Entrapment of the median nerve at the level of the wrist (Carpal canal)

What are the symptoms of CTS?
A
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Pain/aching
- Worse at night or with aggravating activities
*may wake at night - Drop items frequently
- Weakness

What will be found on the PE?
A
- Thenar atrophy
- Strength decreased
- Sensation diminished through median nerve distribution
- Phalanx maneuver
*back of hands together for a min, patient will have pain - Tinel’s sign
*tap on carpal canal

What can make the CTS diagnosis?
A
- Made by H&P
- XRays
*if CTS is not better with treatment

What is the confirmatory test for CTS?
A
- EMG/NCS
*testing the nerves in the muscles
*can be normal or abnormal

What are some adverse outcomes of CTS?
A
- Loss of sensation
- Loss of hand strength
- Inability to perform fine motor skills

What is the treatment of CTS?
A
- Splinting and therapy (mild to moderate)
- ICE, heat, exercises, job modifications
- NSAIDs
- CI
- Surgery
