Distal Biceps Tendon Rupture Flashcards
1
Q
Where do distal biceps tendon ruptures originate from
A
- The distal biceps insertion at the radial tuberosity
2
Q
What is the presentation of a distal biceps tendon rupture?
A
- Sudden pain at anterior elbow
- History of lifting (force exerted on flexed elbow)
- Pain decreases over the course of the first day
3
Q
Which bicep tendon rupture causes more weakness? Distal or Proximal?
A
- Proximal
4
Q
What will be found on the PE?
A
- Palpable defect antecubital area
*wont feel the tendon or wont be as wide - Bruising
- Muscle retraction up into arm with flexion of elbow
5
Q
What are the diagnostic tests?
A
- Radiographs
*normal
*avulsion fracture may be present - MRI confirms diagnosis
6
Q
What is the treatment?
A
- Surgical repair #1
Non-surgical treatment:
*reserved for the elderly, poor surgical candidates, non dominant arm with delayed presentations
7
Q
What are the adverse outcomes?
A
- Continued weakness
- Radial nerve injury
- Infection
- Chronic pain
- Ectopic ossification (bone growth where you don’t want it)
