conditions that reflect loss of connective tissue support

what is pelvic organ prolapse?
A
disorder in which organs have lost their support and descend through the urogenital hiatus

- genetic predisposition
- parity (vaginal birth),
- menopause
- advancing age
- prior pelvic surgery
- connective tissue disorders
- obesity
- excessive straining (cough/lifting)

what are signs and symptoms of pelvic support defects?
A
- urinary or fecal incontinence or retention
- vaginal pressure or heaviness
- abdominal, low back, vaginal, or perineal pain or discomfort
- difficulty walking
- cervical hypertrophy, excoriation, ulceration, or bleeding

what are treatments for prolapse syndromes?
A
- high fiber diet
- weight reduction in obese patients
- kegel exercises are mainstay
- limit straining and lifting
- pessary if no surgery or in chronic illness
