Pressure of the disc contents on the nerve as well as chemical irritation of the contents

A
Distal lumbar spine
*L4-L5, L5-S1

What are the symptoms
A
Radicular leg pain
Worse with literally everything
Difficulty getting comfortable

What will be on the PE?
A
- Listing posture
- Decreased ROM
- Straight leg raise

What tests to order
A
XRays (not specific)
MRI (if there is no improvement)

What is the treatment
A
NSAIDS
Rest (for max 48 hours)
PT
Epidural injection (limit 3)
Surgical discectomy (last resort)

Can manipulation, traction, and acupuncture help?
A
No proven efficacy
