Ostoarthrits Of The Hip Flashcards
What is the etiology of osteoarthritis of the hip
Wear and tear
What is the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis of the hip
Joint undergoes degenerative changes
*subchondral bony sclerosis and Subchondral cyst formation
*loss of articular cartilage
What are the stages of articular cartilage loss?
I: mild, softening of cartilage
II: mild-moderate, cracking/fissuring/blistering of cartilage may start to see osteophytes formation
III: moderate, loss of cartilage, osteophytes present
IV: severe, full thickness cartilage loss
Are the chondrocytes able to repair the damaged cartilage
NO
What is the clinical presentation osteoarthritis of the hip
- Pain with use or after use
*specifically in the groin and with internal/external rotation - Insidious onset
- Typically starts with one joint
What will be found on the PE?
- Decreased ROM
- Altered gait
- Pain with internal/external rotation
- Decreased muscle strength
- May be tender to Palpation
What will be found on the radiographs? (osteoarthritis of the hip)
- Joint space narrowing
- Subchondral cyst formation
- Osteophytes formation
- Findings are superolateral
What is the treatment of osteoarthritis of the hip
- Lifestyle modifications
- Cane
- Therapy for strengthening and gait training
- Cortisone injections
- Surgical
*hip arthroscopy
*total hip arthroplasty
