theories of victimisation Flashcards
what is positivist victimlogy
-tierney suggest you can identify characterstics in victims that make them more likely to be vicitms
what 2 characterstics does tierney identify
victim proneness and vicitm precipitation
what is vicitm proneness
-identifies the charactertsics of individuals or groups that make them more vulnerbale to victimisation e.g living in deprived area
what is victim of precipaptation
-suggests that victims are in some way responsible for becoming victims e.g women dressing provactively or leaving valuables on display in car
how can we evalauate positivists
-blames victims not offenders
-downplays role of the law in not tackling offending effectively
-focuses too much on characteristics of victims
what is radical vicitmology
-marxists and feminists
-focuses on wider social issues
-e.g weakest and poorest memebers of society likely to be vicitms
-rape and DV (women are main vicitms)reflect male power and patriarchy
-ethnic minorities= victimised due to institutional racism - not properly protected (always seen as offenders not victims)
how to evaluate radical victimology
-ignores vicitm precipitaiton and vicitm proneness
-does not acknowledge that women may be pepertrtors at the same time e.g those groomed for county lines e.g drug dealing
