what is the difference between crime and deviance? with exmaples?
crime= act that breaks the law
deviance- act going againisr norms of society (may or may not be illegal) e.g pouring coffee on teachers desk
what does it mean to say crime and deviance is socially constructed?
-made up by society
-NEWBURN= crime has a label attached to it to certain behaviours and prohbited by the state
-crime is only a crime when its applied to the act
how might crimes and deviance change overtime?
-divorce was illegal and now legal
-abortion was illegal and now legal
-same-sex marriage was illegal and now legal
how do acts classified as crimnal or deviant vary in diff countries?
legal drinking/ driving/ smoking age
what does Plummer say about societal deviance and situational deviance?
-‘societal deviance’ is acts that most members of public would see as deviant and share similar ideas of whats acceptable and whats not e.g child abuse
-situaitonal deviance= refers to whats seen as deviant or not dpeends on the context and location it takes place in
