-returning to fundamnetals of religion based on literal interpretation of sacred texts
-e.g islam or jewish

-Literal interpretation of sacred texts
-Belief that a Messiah will return and put the world to rights / apocalyptic end
-Hostility towards other beliefs
-Being opposed to secularisation and modernisation
-Desire to re-shape the world in accordance with their beliefs
-Use of violence – e.g. bombing abortion clinics, or Jihad.
how does fundamentalism emerge
as a response to the threat to traditional religious beliefs – modernisation, science, globalisation
how does fundamentalism act as conservative force
-maintain tradiitonal values
-support social change to going back to traditional values that are at risk of disappearing
how does fundamnetalism act as source of conflict
-conflict beyween the liberal, more secular values of the west and the traditonal relgious ones of the east
recent exmaples of conflicts motivated by relgious fundamentalism
- terror attacks e.g. 9-11, 7-7, ISIS etc. and other more recent anti-European terror activity
-Afghanistan – Taliban regime reversed modernisation and social change through a return to a strict Islamic Fundamentalist regime. —–Women were expected to return to a role as oppressed
