ΦΕΙΔΙΠΠΙΔΗΣ τί, ὦ πάτερ;
PHEIDIPPIDES What, father?
ΣΤΡΕΨ. εἰπέ μοι, ὦ υἱέ, ἆρα φιλεῖς με;
STR. Tell me, son, do you love me?
ΦΙΔ. ἔγωγε, καὶ οὐ παύσομαι οὐδέποτε.
PHEI. I [do], and I don’t ever stop [loving you].
ΣΤΡΕΨ. ἆρ’ αὔριον φιλήσεις με;
STR. Will you love me tomorrow?
ΦΙΔ. νὴ τὸν Ποσειδῶ τουτονὶ τὸν ἵππιον, αὔριόν σε φιλήσω, καὶ οὐ παύσομαι οὐδέποτε.
PHEI. By Poseidon here, god of horses, I shall love you tomorrow and I shan’t stop ever.
ΣΤΡΕΨ. μὴ λέγε μηδαμῶς “τοῦτον τὸν ἵππιον,” ὦ παῖ —
STR. Don’t ever mention that horsey one, son …
… τῶν γὰρ κακῶν τῶν ἐμῶν ἐκεῖνος τὴν αἰτίαν ἔχει —
— for that one has the responsibility for my troubles —
… ἀλλ’ ἄκουε, καὶ πείθου.
but listen and obey.
ΦΙΔ. ἰδού, ἀκούω, καὶ πείθομαι καὶ πείσομαι ἀεί.
PHEI. Look, I am listening and obeying and I shall always obey.
σὺ δὲ λέγε δή.
So speak then!
τί κελεύεις;
What are you ordering?
ΣΤΡΕΨ. σμικρόν τι κελεύσω, ὦ παῖ, πάνυ σμικρόν τι.
STR. I shall order a small thing, my son, a very small thing.
