Q

ΔΙΚ. σὺ οὖν, ὦ ῥαψῳδέ, στρατηγὸς ἄριστος εἶ τῶν Ἑλλήνων;

A

DIK. Are you then, rhapsode, the best general of the Greeks?

17
Q

ΡΑΨ. πῶς γὰρ οὔ;

A

RHAPSODE Of course.

18
Q

ΔΙΚ. τί λέγετε, ὦ ναῦται; ἆρα μῶρος ὁ ῥαψῳδος ἢ οὔ;

A

DIK. What do you say, sailors? Is the rhapsode a fool or not?

19
Q

ΝΑΥ.

A

SAILORS By Zeus the rhapsode is indeed a fool, Dikaiopolis.

20
Q

A

The fellow is, of course, the best general of the Greeks, but he does not know precisely whether the ship is “black” or “swift” or “hollow.”

21
Q

A

So the best general of the Greeks is a fool.

22
Q

ΡΑΨ.

A

RHAPSODE It is clear, Dikaiopolis, that you are Socratising and joking with me.

23
Q

A

For Socrates always jokes in this way with his students.

24
Q

ΔΙΚ. ναί.

A

DIK. Yes. The Greeks are always children.
