So down goes the captain, and down go both Dikaiopolis and the sailors.
For the noise [is] from below.
And below, it is Hegestratos that the captain and the sailors see.
Hegestratos is making the noise below.
ΚΥΒ. οὗτος, τί ποιεῖς;
CAPTAIN: Hey you! What are you doing?
(suddenly realizing it is Hegestratos) ἀλλὰ τὶ ποιεῖς σύ, ὦ Ἡγέστρατε;
But what are YOU doing, Hegestratos?
τίς ὁ ψόφος;
What [is] the noise?
HEG. I am not doing anything, captain, nor do I hear any noise. Don’t worry.
ΔΙΚ.
DIK. Come over here and look, captain.
For Hegestratos has something in his right hand.
ΚΥΒ. τί ἔχεις ἐν τῇ δεξιᾷ, ὦ Ἡγέστρατε;
CAPTAIN What do you have in your right hand, Hegestratos?
ΗΓ. (desperately trying to cover up) οὐδὲν ἔχω ἔγωγε, ὦ φίλε.
HEG. I have nothing, friend, not me.
ΔΙΚ. ὦ Ζεῦ.
DIK. O Zeus! For Hegestratos is not telling the truth.
For Hegestratos has an ax in his right hand.
The fellow is sinking the ship.
ΚΥΒ. (shocked) τί λέγεις, ὦ Δικαιόπολι;
CAPTAIN What are you saying, Dikaiopolis?
δύει τὸ πλοῖον ὁ Ἡγέστρατος;
Hegestratos is sinking the ship?
(calling to the crew)
But why don’t you catch the man, sailors? Over here, over here!
ΗΓ.
HEG. O dear, I’m off, and I’m throwing myself out of the ship.
ΚΥΒ. (urging the crew to help)
CAPTAIN Help, sailors, help and pursue [him].
