ΣΤΡΕΨ. (suddenly decides to check on his debts) ἀλλὰ τί ὀφείλω;
STREPSIADES But what do I owe?
Slave! Come here!
Light a lamp.
For I can’t see anything now;
for it is deep night.
ΘΕΡΑΠΩΝ πῶς οὖν λύχνον ἅπτω, ὦ δέσποτα;
SLAVE And how can I light the lamp, master?
Look! There is no oil in the lamp.
ΣΤΡΕΨ. τί φῄς;
STR. What are you saying?
ἔλαιον οὐκ ἔχει ὁ λύχνος;
The lamp has no oil?
Unhappy me!
Come here and weep!
(lifts his hand to strike, but checks himself) ὡς κακός ἐσθ’ ὁ πόλεμος.
How evil is the war!
I no longer punish my slaves, although they are idle.
For the war stops [me].
Alas for my troubles!
For now we give orders, but they do not obey.
But when we were young, then the old men always used to punish their slaves.
So they were not idle, nor did they treat their masters badly,
but were good and always obeyed.
For they were afraid of punishment.
(with determination) ἀλλὰ διὰ τί οὐ σῴζω ἑμαυτὸν καὶ τὸν ὑιὸν ἐκ τῶν χρεῶν;
But why don’t I save myself and my son from our debts?
Why don’t I look for some scheme,
… καὶ παύω τὰ χρέα ταῦτα;
and put and end to these debts?
Now, Strepsiades, save yourself!
(in triumph) ἰοὺ ἰού.
Hurray, hurray! I have a plan!
νῦν δὲ διὰ τί οὐ παύω καθεύδοντα τοῦτον τὸν νεανίαν;
Now why don’t I stop this young man sleeping?
