Acute Prostatitis
Acute inflammation of the prostate often due to bacteria
What are the common pathogens in acute prostatitis in young males?
C. trichromatic and N. gonorrhea
What are the common pathogens in acute prostatitis in older males?
E. coli and Pseudomonas
What is the presentation of acute prostatitis?
Dysuria with fever and chills - prostate will be tender and boggy
Chronic Prostatitis
Presents as dysuria with pelvic or low back pain
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Hyperplasia of prostatic stroma and glands that is related to age and can cause urethral obstruction
What hormone is BPH associated with?
DHT
Is there increased risk for cancer with BPH?
No
What will happen to the bladder with BPH?
Hypertrophy
What marker will be elevated in BPH?
PSA (slight)
What are the treatments for BPH?
- alpha1-antagonist
- selective alpha1A-antagonist
- 5alpha-reductase inhibitor
Prostate Adenocarcinoma
Malignant proliferation of prostate glands
What is the most common location for prostate cancer?
Posterior Periphery
What are the screening methods for prostate cancer?
- Digital Rectal Exam

What is a decrease in the percentage of free-PSA suggestive of?
Cancer
