Cleft Lip and Palate
Due to failure of facial prominences to fuse
Aphtous Ulcer
Painful ulceration of oral mucosa that can arise from stress and recur
Behcet Syndrome
Recurrent aphthous ulcers, genital ulcers and uveitis due to immune complex vasculitis in small vessels
Oral Herpes
Vesicles in the oral mucosa that rupture and cause shallow painful red ulcers and often caused by HSV-1 - “cold sore”
Where does HSV-1 remain dormant?
Ganglion of the trigeminal nerve
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Neoplasm of squamous cells lining the oral mucosa
What is the most common location of SCC?
Floor of the mouth
What are the major risk factors of SCC?
Tobacco and alcohol
What are the precursor lesions to SCC?
Leukoplakia and erythroplakia (more suggestive of SCC)
