1.3 Cell Death Flashcards
What is the hallmark of cell death?
Loss of the nucleus
How does the destruction of nucleus occur step-by-step?
Pyknosis - shrinkage of nucleus
Karyorrhexis - breakdown of nucleus into parts
Karyolysis - molecular breakdown of the nucleus
What occurs with necrosis?
Inflammation
What are the findings with coagulative necrosis?
Nuclei disappear with the organ structure preserved
What are the findings with liquefactive necrosis?
Enzymatic lysis of cells and proteins leaves liquid
What are the findings with gangrene necrosis?
Ischemia of an extremity or GI tract
What are the findings with caseous necrosis?
Cottage cheese appearance characteristic of granulamatous inflammation
What are the findings with fat necrosis?
Chalky white due to Ca2+ deposition
What is saponification?
When Ca2+ deposits into fat
What are the findings with fibrinoid necrosis?
Damage to the vessel wall will leak proteins that stain pink
What are the common causes of coagulative necrosis?
Ischemia to solid organs
What are the common causes of liquefactive necrosis?
Bacterial infection
Brain infarction
Pancreatitis
What are the common causes of caseous necrosis?
TB
Fungal infection
What are the common causes of fat necrosis?
Breast trauma
Surrounding fat in pancreatitis
