The Eye of the World_38 Flashcards
After a [jikan] Loial sighed.
After a time Loial sighed.
“The [hoīru] [tān],”
“The Wheel turns,”
he said, “and no one knows its turning.
he said, “and no one knows its turning.
[shikashi] you have come almost as far from your home as I have.
But you have come almost as far from your home as I have.
A [hijō ni] considerable [kyori], as [monogoto] are now.
A very considerable distance, as things are now.
When the [hōhō] were freely [ōpun], of [mochiron] – [shikashi] that is long past.
When the Ways were freely open, of course – but that is long past.
Tell me, what brings you so far?
Tell me, what brings you so far?
Is there something you want to see, too?”
Is there something you want to see, too?”
Rand opened his [kuchi no naka] to say that they had come to see the false [doragon] – and he could not say it.
Rand opened his mouth to say that they had come to see the false Dragon – and he could not say it.
Perhaps it was because Loial acted as [baai] he were no older than Rand, ninety [toshi] old or no ninety [toshi] old.
Perhaps it was because Loial acted as if he were no older than Rand, ninety years old or no ninety years old.
Maybe for an Ogier ninety [toshi] was not any older than he was.
Maybe for an Ogier ninety years was not any older than he was.
It had been a long [jikan] since he had been able to really [hanashi] to anyone about what was [dekigoto].
It had been a long time since he had been able to really talk to anyone about what was happening.
Always the [kyōfu] that they might be [Kurai-yūjin], or think he was.
Always the fear that they might be Darkfriends, or think he was.
Mat was so drawn in on himself, feeding his [kyōfu] on his own [utagai], that he was no [yoi] for talking.
Mat was so drawn in on himself, feeding his fears on his own suspicions, that he was no good for talking.
Rand found himself [uranai] Loial about Winternight.
Rand found himself telling Loial about Winternight.
Not a vague [monogatari] about [Kurai-yūjin]; the [shinjitsu] about Trollocs breaking in the [tobira], and a Fade on the [saiseki jō] [dōro].
Not a vague story about Darkfriends; the truth about Trollocs breaking in the door, and a Fade on the Quarry Road.
[ichibu] of him was horrified at what he was doing, [shikashi] it was almost as [baai] he were two [hitobito], one trying to hold his [shita] [dōjini, tsutsu, issun] the [sonota] only [kanjita] the [ando] at [kōfuku] able to tell it all finally.
Part of him was horrified at what he was doing, but it was almost as if he were two people, one trying to hold his tongue while the other only felt the relief at being able to tell it all finally.
The [sono kekka] was that he stumbled and stuttered and jumped around in the [monogatari].
The result was that he stumbled and stuttered and jumped around in the story.
Shadar Logoth and losing his [yūjin] in the [yoru, kishi_knt], not knowing [baai] they were alive or [shin da].
Shadar Logoth and losing his friends in the night, not knowing if they were alive or dead.
The Fade in Whitebridge; and Thom dying so they could [dasshutsu].
The Fade in Whitebridge; and Thom dying so they could escape.
The Fade in Baerlon.
The Fade in Baerlon.
[Kurai-yūjin] later, Howal Gode, and the [otokonoko] who was afraid of them, and the [onna] who tried to kill Mat.
Darkfriends later, Howal Gode, and the boy who was afraid of them, and the woman who tried to kill Mat.
The Halfman [soto ni] the [gachō] and [kuraun].
The Halfman outside the Goose and Crown.
When he started babbling about dreams, even the [ichibu] of him that wanted to [hanashi] [kanjita] the [hakkuru] rising on the [rimen] of his [kubi].
When he started babbling about dreams, even the part of him that wanted to talk felt the hackles rising on the back of his neck.
He [sukoshi] his [shita] clamping his [ha] shut.
He bit his tongue clamping his teeth shut.
Breathing heavily through his [hana], he watched the Ogier warily, hoping he [shikō] he had meant [akumu].
Breathing heavily through his nose, he watched the Ogier warily, hoping he thought he had meant nightmares.
The [hikari] knew it all sounded like a [akumu], or enough to give anyone [akumu].
The Light knew it all sounded like a nightmare, or enough to give anyone nightmares.
Maybe Loial would just think he was going mad.
Maybe Loial would just think he was going mad.
Maybe…
Maybe…
“tanin’veren,”
“Ta’veren,”
Loial said.
Loial said.
Rand blinked.
Rand blinked.
“What?”
“What?”
“tanin’veren.”
“Ta’veren.”
Loial rubbed behind a pointed [mimi] with one blunt [yubi] and gave a little [kata o sukumeru].
Loial rubbed behind a pointed ear with one blunt finger and gave a little shrug.
“[chōrō] Haman always said I never listened, [shikashi] sometimes I did.
“Elder Haman always said I never listened, but sometimes I did.
Sometimes, I listened.
Sometimes, I listened.
You know how the [moyō] is woven, of [mochiron]?”
You know how the Pattern is woven, of course?”
“I never really [shikō] about it,”
“I never really thought about it,”
he said slowly.
he said slowly.
“It just is.”
“It just is.”
“Um, yes, [yoku].
“Um, yes, well.
Not exactly.
Not exactly.
You see, the [hoīru] of [jikan] weaves the [moyō] of the [toshi], and the [sureddo] it uses are [inochi].
You see, the Wheel of Time weaves the Pattern of the Ages, and the threads it uses are lives.
It is not fixed, the [moyō], not always.
It is not fixed, the Pattern, not always.
[baai] a [otoko] tries to [henkō] the [hōkō] of his [jinsei] and the [moyō] has [heya] for it, the [hoīru] just weaves on and takes it in.
If a man tries to change the direction of his life and the Pattern has room for it, the Wheel just weaves on and takes it in.
There is always [heya] for small [henka], [shikashi] sometimes the [moyō] simply won’t accept a big [henkō], no [mondai] how hard you try.
There is always room for small changes, but sometimes the Pattern simply won’t accept a big change, no matter how hard you try.
You understand?”
You understand?”
Rand nodded.
Rand nodded.
“I could live on the [nōjō] or in Emond’s [ryōiki], and that would be a small [henkō].
“I could live on the farm or in Emond’s Field, and that would be a small change.
[baai] I wanted to be a [ō], though…“
If I wanted to be a king, though…”
He laughed, and Loial gave a grin that almost split his [kao] in two.
He laughed, and Loial gave a grin that almost split his face in two.
His [ha] were [shiroi], and as broad as [nomi].
His teeth were white, and as broad as chisels.
“Yes, that’s it.
“Yes, that’s it.
[shikashi] sometimes the [henkō] chooses you, or the [hoīru] chooses it for you.
But sometimes the change chooses you, or the Wheel chooses it for you.
And sometimes the [hoīru] bends a [jinsei]-[sureddo], or several [sureddo], in such a [michi] that all the [shūi] [sureddo] are forced to [suwāru] around it, and those [chikara] [sonota] [sureddo], and those still [tanin], and on and on.
And sometimes the Wheel bends a life-thread, or several threads, in such a way that all the surrounding threads are forced to swirl around it, and those force other threads, and those still others, and on and on.
That [saisho] bending to make the [webu], that is tanin’veren, and there is nothing you can do to [henkō] it, not until the [moyō] itself [henka].
That first bending to make the Web, that is ta’veren, and there is nothing you can do to change it, not until the Pattern itself changes.
The [webu] – tanin’maral’ailen, it’s called – can [saigo] for [shūkan], or for [toshi].
The Web – ta’maral’ailen, it’s called – can last for weeks, or for years.
It can take in a [machi], or even the whole [moyō].
It can take in a town, or even the whole Pattern.
Artur Hawkwing was tanin’veren.
Artur Hawkwing was ta’veren.
So was Lews Therin Kinslayer, for that [mondai], I suppose.”
So was Lews Therin Kinslayer, for that matter, I suppose.”
He let out a booming [fukumiwarai].
He let out a booming chuckle.
“[chōrō] Haman would be proud of me.
“Elder Haman would be proud of me.
He always droned on, and the [bukku] about traveling were much more interesting, [shikashi] I did listen sometimes.”
He always droned on, and the books about traveling were much more interesting, but I did listen sometimes.”
“That’s all [hijō ni] [yoku],”
“That’s all very well,”
Rand said, “[shikashi] I don’t see what it has to do with me.
Rand said, “but I don’t see what it has to do with me.
I’m a [hitsuji kai], not another Artur Hawkwing.
I’m a shepherd, not another Artur Hawkwing.
And neither is Mat, or Perrin.
And neither is Mat, or Perrin.
It’s just…
It’s just…
ridiculous.”
ridiculous.”
“I didn’t say you were, [shikashi] I could almost feel the [moyō] [suwāru] just listening to you tell your [monogatari], and I have no [tarento] there.
“I didn’t say you were, but I could almost feel the Pattern swirl just listening to you tell your tale, and I have no Talent there.
You are tanin’veren, all [migi].
You are ta’veren, all right.
You, and maybe your [yūjin], too.”
You, and maybe your friends, too.”
The Ogier paused, rubbing the [hashi] of his broad [hana] thoughtfully.
The Ogier paused, rubbing the bridge of his broad nose thoughtfully.
Finally he nodded to himself as [baai] he had reached a [ketsudan].
Finally he nodded to himself as if he had reached a decision.
“I [negai] to [ryokō] with you, Rand.”
“I wish to travel with you, Rand.”
For a [bun] Rand stared, wondering [baai] he had heard correctly.
For a minute Rand stared, wondering if he had heard correctly.
“With me?”
“With me?”
he exclaimed when he could speak.
he exclaimed when he could speak.
“Didn’t you hear what I said about…?”
“Didn’t you hear what I said about…?”
He eyed the [tobira] suddenly.
He eyed the door suddenly.
It was shut tight, and thick enough that anyone trying to listen on the [sonota] [saido] would hear only a [zatsuon], even with his [mimi] pressed against the wooden [paneru].
It was shut tight, and thick enough that anyone trying to listen on the other side would hear only a murmur, even with his ear pressed against the wooden panels.
Just the same he went on in a lower [koe].
Just the same he went on in a lower voice.
“About who’s chasing me?
“About who’s chasing me?
Anyway, I [shikō] you wanted to go see your [kigi].”
Anyway, I thought you wanted to go see your trees.”
“There is a [hijō ni] [bakkin] [gurōbu] at [tāru] Valon, and I have been told the Aes Sedai [kīpu] it [yoku] tended.
“There is a very fine grove at Tar Valon, and I have been told the Aes Sedai keep it well tended.
Besides, it is not just the [kodachi] I want to see.
Besides, it is not just the groves I want to see.
Perhaps you are not another Artur Hawkwing, [shikashi] for a [jikan], at least, [ichibu] of the [sekai] will [keijō] itself around you, perhaps is even now shaping itself around you.
Perhaps you are not another Artur Hawkwing, but for a time, at least, part of the world will shape itself around you, perhaps is even now shaping itself around you.
Even [chōrō] Haman would want to see that.”
Even Elder Haman would want to see that.”
Rand hesitated.
Rand hesitated.
It would be [yoi] to have [dare-ka] else along.
It would be good to have someone else along.
The [michi] Mat was behaving, [kōfuku] with him was almost like [kōfuku] alone.
The way Mat was behaving, being with him was almost like being alone.
The Ogier was a comforting [sonzai kan].
The Ogier was a comforting presence.
Maybe he was young as Ogier reckoned [jidai], [shikashi] he seemed as unflappable as a [iwa], just like Tam.
Maybe he was young as Ogier reckoned age, but he seemed as unflappable as a rock, just like Tam.
And Loial had been all of those [basho], and knew about [tanin].
And Loial had been all of those places, and knew about others.
He looked at the Ogier, sitting there with his broad [kao] a [gazō] of [nintai].
He looked at the Ogier, sitting there with his broad face a picture of patience.
Sitting there, and taller sitting than most [dansei] standing.
Sitting there, and taller sitting than most men standing.
How do you hide somebody almost ten [ashi] tall?
How do you hide somebody almost ten feet tall?
He sighed and shook his [atama].
He sighed and shook his head.
“I don’t think that is a [yoi] [kangae], Loial.
“I don’t think that is a good idea, Loial.
Even [baai] Moiraine finds us here, we’ll be in [kiken] all the [michi] to [tāru] Valon.
Even if Moiraine finds us here, we’ll be in danger all the way to Tar Valon.
[baai] she does not…“
If she does not…”
[baai] she doesn’t, then she’s [shin da] and so is everyone else.
If she doesn’t, then she’s dead and so is everyone else.
Oh, Egwene.
Oh, Egwene.
He gave himself a [furu].
He gave himself a shake.
Egwene was not [shin da], and Moiraine would find them.
Egwene was not dead, and Moiraine would find them.
Loial looked at him sympathetically and touched his [kata].
Loial looked at him sympathetically and touched his shoulder.
“I am sure your [yūjin] are [yoku], Rand.”
“I am sure your friends are well, Rand.”
Rand nodded his [arigatō gozaimasu].
Rand nodded his thanks.
His [nodo] was too tight to speak.
His throat was too tight to speak.
“will you at least [hanashi] with me sometimes?”
“Will you at least talk with me sometimes?”
Loial sighed, a [teion] rumble.
Loial sighed, a bass rumble.
“And perhaps [geki] a [gēmu] of [ishi]?
“And perhaps play a game of stones?
I have not had anyone to [hanashi] to in [hi], except [yoi] [shujin] Gill, and he is busy most of the [jikan].
I have not had anyone to talk to in days, except good Master Gill, and he is busy most of the time.
The [ryōri jin] seems to [jikkō] him unmercifully.
The cook seems to run him unmercifully.
Perhaps she really owns the [in]?”
Perhaps she really owns the inn?”
“Of [mochiron], I will.”
“Of course, I will.”
His [koe] was hoarse.
His voice was hoarse.
He cleared his [nodo] and tried to grin.
He cleared his throat and tried to grin.
“And [baai] we meet in [tāru] Valon, you can [shō] me the [gurōbu] there.”
“And if we meet in Tar Valon, you can show me the grove there.”
They have to be all [migi].
They have to be all right.
[hikari] send they’re all [migi].
Light send they’re all right.

Chapter 37
The Long [cheisu]
The Long Chase
Nynaeve gripped the [tazuna] of the three [uma] and peered into the [yoru, kishi_knt] as [baai] she could somehow pierce the [yami] and find the Aes Sedai and the [kanshu].
Nynaeve gripped the reins of the three horses and peered into the night as if she could somehow pierce the darkness and find the Aes Sedai and the Warder.
Skeletal [kigi] surrounded her, stark and [kuro] in the dim [gekkō].
Skeletal trees surrounded her, stark and black in the dim moonlight.
The [kigi] and the [yoru, kishi_knt] made an effective [gamen] for whatever Moiraine and Lan were doing, not that either of them had paused to let her know what that was.
The trees and the night made an effective screen for whatever Moiraine and Lan were doing, not that either of them had paused to let her know what that was.
A [hikui] “[kīpu] the [uma] [shizuka],”
A low “Keep the horses quiet,”
from Lan, and they were gone, leaving her standing like a [umagoya no sewa o suru shōnen].
from Lan, and they were gone, leaving her standing like a stableboy.
She glanced at the [uma] and sighed with [fungai].
She glanced at the horses and sighed with exasperation.
Mandarb blended into the [yoru, kishi_knt] almost as [yoku] as his [shujin]’s [gaitō].
Mandarb blended into the night almost as well as his master’s cloak.
The only [riyū] the [tatakai]-trained [taneuma] was letting her get this [tojiru] was because Lan had handed her the [tazuna] himself.
The only reason the battle-trained stallion was letting her get this close was because Lan had handed her the reins himself.
He seemed calm enough now, [shikashi] she remembered all too [yoku] the [kuchibiru] [zumen] back silently when she reached for his [tazuna] without waiting for Lan’s [shōnin].
He seemed calm enough now, but she remembered all too well the lips drawing back silently when she reached for his bridle without waiting for Lan’s approval.
The [chinmoku] had made the bared [ha] seem that much more dangerous.
The silence had made the bared teeth seem that much more dangerous.
With a [saigo] wary [hyōjō] at the [taneuma], she turned to [pia] in the [hōkō] the [sonota] two had gone, idly stroking her own [uma].
With a last wary look at the stallion, she turned to peer in the direction the other two had gone, idly stroking her own horse.
She gave a startled [janpu] when Aldieb pushed a pale [jūkō] under her [te], [shikashi] after a [bun] she gave the [shiroi] [māre] a pat, too.
She gave a startled jump when Aldieb pushed a pale muzzle under her hand, but after a minute she gave the white mare a pat, too.
“No must to take it out on you, I suppose,”
“No need to take it out on you, I suppose,”
she whispered, “just because your [shufu] is a [samui]-faced .”
she whispered, “just because your mistress is a cold-faced–”
She strained at the [yami] again.
She strained at the darkness again.
What were they doing?
What were they doing?
After leaving Whitebridge they had ridden through [mura] that seemed unreal in their [seijō], ordinary [shijō] [mura] that seemed to Nynaeve unconnected to a [sekai] that had Fades and Trollocs and Aes Sedai.
After leaving Whitebridge they had ridden through villages that seemed unreal in their normality, ordinary market villages that seemed to Nynaeve unconnected to a world that had Fades and Trollocs and Aes Sedai.
They had followed the Caemlyn [dōro], until at [saigo] Moiraine sat forward in Aldieb’s [sadoru], peering eastward as [baai] she could see the whole [nagasa] of the great [kōsoku dōro], all the many [mairu] to Caemlyn, and see, too, what waited there.
They had followed the Caemlyn Road, until at last Moiraine sat forward in Aldieb’s saddle, peering eastward as if she could see the whole length of the great highway, all the many miles to Caemlyn, and see, too, what waited there.
Eventually the Aes Sedai let out a long [iki] and settled back.
Eventually the Aes Sedai let out a long breath and settled back.
“The [hoīru] weaves as the [hoīru] [yuigon],”
“The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills,”
she murmured, “[shikashi] I cannot [shinjiru] it weaves an [owari] to [kibō].
she murmured, “but I cannot believe it weaves an end to hope.
I must [saisho] take [kaigo] of that of which I can be certain.
I must first take care of that of which I can be certain.
It will be as the [hoīru] weaves.”
It will be as the Wheel weaves.”
And she turned her [māre] [kita], off the [dōro] into the [mori].
And she turned her mare north, off the road into the forest.
One of the [otokonoko] was in that [hōkō] with the [koin] Moiraine had given him.
One of the boys was in that direction with the coin Moiraine had given him.
Lan followed.
Lan followed.
Nynaeve gave a long [saigo] [hyōjō] at the Caemlyn [dōro].
Nynaeve gave a long last look at the Caemlyn Road.
Few [hitobito] shared the [dōro] with them there, a [kappuru] of high-wheeled [kāto] and one empty [wagon] in the [kyori], a [ichi nigiri] of [fōku] afoot with their [mochimono] on their [bakkuappu shimasu] or piled on [teoshisha].
Few people shared the roadway with them there, a couple of high-wheeled carts and one empty wagon in the distance, a handful of folk afoot with their belongings on their backs or piled on pushcarts.
Some of those were willing to admit they were on their [michi] to Caemlyn to see the false [doragon], [shikashi] most denied it vehemently, especially those who had come through Whitebridge.
Some of those were willing to admit they were on their way to Caemlyn to see the false Dragon, but most denied it vehemently, especially those who had come through Whitebridge.
At Whitebridge she had begun to [shinjiru] Moiraine.
At Whitebridge she had begun to believe Moiraine.
Somewhat.
Somewhat.
More, at any [ritsu].
More, at any rate.
And there was no [nagusame] in that.
And there was no comfort in that.
The [kanshu] and the Aes Sedai were almost out of [kōkei] through the [kigi] before she started after them.
The Warder and the Aes Sedai were almost out of sight through the trees before she started after them.
She hurried to [kyacchi] up.
She hurried to catch up.
Lan looked back at her frequently, and waved for her to come on, [shikashi] he kept at Moiraine’s [kata], and the Aes Sedai had her [me] fixed ahead.
Lan looked back at her frequently, and waved for her to come on, but he kept at Moiraine’s shoulder, and the Aes Sedai had her eyes fixed ahead.
One [yūgata] after they left the [dōro], the invisible [toreiru] failed.
One evening after they left the road, the invisible trail failed.
Moiraine, the unflappable Moiraine, suddenly stood up beside the small [kasai] where the [ocha] [yaka n] was boiling, her [me] widening.
Moiraine, the unflappable Moiraine, suddenly stood up beside the small fire where the tea kettle was boiling, her eyes widening.
“It is gone,”
“It is gone,”
she whispered at the [yoru, kishi_knt].
she whispered at the night.”
“He is…?”
He is…?”
Nynaeve could not [shiagari] the [shitsumon].
Nynaeve could not finish the question.
[hikari], I don’t even know which one it is!
Light, I don’t even know which one it is!
“He did not [dai],”
“He did not die,”
the Aes Sedai said slowly, “[shikashi] he no longer has the [tō kun].”
the Aes Sedai said slowly, “but he no longer has the token.”
She sat down, her [koe] [reberu] and her [te] steady as she took the [yaka n] off the [honoo] and tossed in a [ichi nigiri] of [ocha].
She sat down, her voice level and her hands steady as she took the kettle off the flames and tossed in a handful of tea.
“In the [asa] we will [kīpu] on as we’ve been going.
“In the morning we will keep on as we’ve been going.
When I get [tojiru] enough, I can find him without the [koin].”
When I get close enough, I can find him without the coin.”
As the [kasai] burned down to [sekitan], Lan rolled himself in his [gaitō] and went to [suimin].
As the fire burned down to coals, Lan rolled himself in his cloak and went to sleep.
Nynaeve could not [suimin].
Nynaeve could not sleep.
She watched the Aes Sedai.
She watched the Aes Sedai.
Moiraine had her [me] closed, [shikashi] she sat [chokuritsu], and Nynaeve knew she was awake.
Moiraine had her eyes closed, but she sat upright, and Nynaeve knew she was awake.
Long after the [saigo] [kagayaki] had faded from the [sekitan], Moiraine opened her [me] and looked at her.
Long after the last glow had faded from the coals, Moiraine opened her eyes and looked at her.
She could feel the Aes Sedai’s [egao] even in the [kurai].
She could feel the Aes Sedai’s smile even in the dark.
“He has regained the [koin], [chie].
“He has regained the coin, Wisdom.
All will be [yoku].”
All will be well.”
She lay down on her [mōfu] with a [tameiki] and almost at once was breathing [fukai] in slumber.
She lay down on her blankets with a sigh and almost at once was breathing deep in slumber.
Nynaeve had a hard [jikan] joining her, tired as she was.
Nynaeve had a hard time joining her, tired as she was.
Her [kokoro] conjured up the worst no [mondai] how she tried to [teishi] it.
Her mind conjured up the worst no matter how she tried to stop it.
All will be [yoku].
All will be well.
After Whitebridge, she could no longer make herself [shinjiru] that so easily.
After Whitebridge, she could no longer make herself believe that so easily.
Abruptly Nynaeve was jerked from [memori] back to the [yoru, kishi_knt]; there really was a [te] on her [āmu].
Abruptly Nynaeve was jerked from memory back to the night; there really was a hand on her arm.
Stifling the [sakebi] that [jōshō shita] in her [nodo], she fumbled for the [naifu] at her [beruto], her [te] closing on the [moyō] before she realized that the [te] was Lan’s.
Stifling the cry that rose in her throat, she fumbled for the knife at her belt, her hand closing on the hilt before she realized that the hand was Lan’s.
The [kanshu]’s [fūdo] was thrown back, [shikashi] his chameleon-like [gaitō] blended so [yoku] with the [yoru, kishi_knt] that the dim [bokashi] of his [kao] seemed to [hangu] suspended in the [yoru, kishi_knt].
The Warder’s hood was thrown back, but his chameleon-like cloak blended so well with the night that the dim blur of his face seemed to hang suspended in the night.
The [te] on her [āmu] appeared to come out of thin [kūki].
The hand on her arm appeared to come out of thin air.
She drew a shuddering [iki].
She drew a shuddering breath.
She expected him to [komento] on how easily he had come on her unaware, [shikashi] instead he turned to dig into his [sadoru].
She expected him to comment on how easily he had come on her unaware, but instead he turned to dig into his saddlebags.
“You are needed,”
“You are needed,”
he said, and knelt to fasten [ashikase] on the [uma].
he said, and knelt to fasten hobbles on the horses.
As soon as the [uma] were secured, he straightened, grasped her [te], and headed off into the [yoru, kishi_knt] again.
As soon as the horses were secured, he straightened, grasped her hand, and headed off into the night again.
His [kurai] [kami] fit into the [yoru, kishi_knt] almost as [yoku] as his [gaitō], and he made even less [noizu] than she did.
His dark hair fit into the night almost as well as his cloak, and he made even less noise than she did.
Grudgingly she had to admit that she could never have followed him through the [yami] without his [gurippu] as a [gaido].
Grudgingly she had to admit that she could never have followed him through the darkness without his grip as a guide.
She was not certain she could [puru] loose [baai] he did not want to release her, anyway; he had [hijō ni] strong [te].
She was not certain she could pull loose if he did not want to release her, anyway; he had very strong hands.
As they came up on a small [jōshō], barely enough to be called a [oka], he sank to one [hiza], pulling her down beside him.
As they came up on a small rise, barely enough to be called a hill, he sank to one knee, pulling her down beside him.
It took her a [shunkan] to see that Moiraine was there, too.
It took her a moment to see that Moiraine was there, too.
Unmoving, the Aes Sedai could have passed for a [kage] in her [kurai] [gaitō].
Unmoving, the Aes Sedai could have passed for a shadow in her dark cloak.
