Types of Pain Flashcards
What is neuropathic pain
nerve pain
What are conditions that can lead to pain by damage to peripheral nerves causing neuropathic pain
Diabetes mellitus, long term alcohol use, hypothyroidism, renal insufficiency, drug treatment with neurotoxic agents
What is a syndrome that can result from damage from peripheral nerves
Complex regional pain syndrome
Nerve damage associated with amputation is believed to be a cause of what
Phantom limb
What are treatment methods for neuropathic pain
palliation of pain, resecting tumor causing nerve compression
What does neuropathic pain feel like
allodynia, stabbing, jabbing, burning or shooting
What is neuralgia
Spinal or cranial nerve pain
What is neuralgia characterized as
severe, brief, repetitive attacks of lightning like or throbbing pain
What is neuralgia usually precipitated by?
The stimulation of the cutaneous region supplied by that nerve
What are the mani’s of trigeminal neuralgia
facial tics/ spasms, sudden or recurrent stabbing pain usu in trigeminal cranial nerve (maxillary/ mandibular)
What is the pain like for trigeminal neuralgia
intermittent, excruciating
What is the pathophysiology of trigeminal neuralgia
neuromuscular compression, can be secondary to a tumor formation, or MS
What types of pain do people with postherpetic neuralgia suffer from
constant pain, intermittent pain, and stimulus- evoked pain (allodynia)
What disorder is postherpetic neuralgia associated with
Herpes zoster because the virus travels from the affected sensory ganglia and peripheral nerve to skin (dermatome)
What is the treatment for postherpetic neuralgia
topical anesthetic agent, lidocaine-prilocaine cream or 5% lidocaine gel
What is complex regional pain syndrome
rare disorder of the extremities characterized by autonomic and vasomotor instability
How to reduce complex regional pain syndrome
Early mobilization after injury/ surgery
What is phantom limb
Type of neurologic pain following a limb amputtion
What does the pain feel like in phantom limb
starts off tingling, heat and cold, heaviness followed by burning, cramping, shooting pain
What notable feature that indicates pain from a neuropathic process (neuropathic pain)
widespread pain that isnt explainable deficit of sensation like numbness and parathesias buurning pain pain from light strokes on the skin allodynia
What are some things that can trigger trigeminal neuralgia
light touch, movement, and eating
What are the causes of neuropathic pain
Pressure on nerve Physical injury to neuron Chemical injury to neuron Infection of neuron Ischemia Inflammation
