Strains and Sprains Flashcards
What is the difference between a strain and a sprain
strains involve muscles (the muscle-tendon unit)
sprains involve the supporting ligaments of joints
When do strains happen
when the muscle-tendon unit is suddenly stretched
Who are more likely to get strains and why
older people because as we age the collagen fibers in the muscle-tendon units change causing a decreases in the muscles elasticity
Where are the common sites of strains
lower back and cervical region of the spine
elbow, hip, shoulder, legs
What area is more likely to be affected in athletes
hips and legs
What is a good way to prevent strains
proper warm-ups
When do sprains happen
abnormal or excessive mvement of a joint
What happens in a sprain
the ligament may be completely or incompletely torn
What are the treatments for sprains and strains
RICE Rest Ice Compression Elevation
What is a dislocation
when the articulating surfaces of a joint are not in contact
What is a subluxation
When the articulating surfaces of a joint are in partial contact
What types of problems cause dislocations
congenital problems
trauma
pathologic problems
Where do congenital dislocations happen
hips and knees
What is a common problem with traumatic dislocations
they tend to happen again with less and less force
What are some examples of causes of pathologic dislocation
inflammation from infection
rheumatoid arth
paralysis
neuromuscular diseases
