Physical, Behavioral, and cognitive abnormalities resulting from maternal alcohol consumption
What is the occurrence of FAS?
2-5% of the population
How does alcohol get to baby?
Passes freely across the placental barrier
What are characteristics of FAS?

Is it possible for FAS features to not be as apparent in newborns but become more prominent as infant develops?

How many criteria(s) are needed for a FAS diagnosis?

What are the three criteria to diagnose someone with FAS?
- Three facial abnormalities (thin vermillion, flat philtrum, small palpebral fissure)
- Growth deficits (below 10th percentile for heigh & weight)
- CNS abnormalities (below 10th percentile for head circumference, attention/hyperactivity problems, motor delays)
Is consuming small amounts of alcohol safe for the baby?
No
What is the recommended intake amount of alcohol during pregnancy?
None, you must abstain!
