Renal infection: Chronic Pyelonephritis Flashcards
What is chronic pyelonephritis?
recurring or persistent bacterial infection superimposed on urinary tract obstruction, urine reflux or both
What are the types of refluxes
superimposition of infection on congenital vesicoureteral reflux or infrarenal reflux
Who is more at risk of chronic pyelo
history of recurrent episodes of UTI or acute pyelo
What are the manifestations of chronic pyelonephritis
Minimal, hypertension, frequency, dysuria, flank pain
What makes chronic pyelonephritis unique
Scarring
What is the pathophysiology of chronic pyelonephritis
chronic obstruction leads to chronic inflammation leads to structural changes in the renal pelvis/ calyces which leads to atrophy, dilation and diffuse scarring of tubules that impair ability to make urine
What does the pathophysiology of chronic pyelo set you up fo r
chronic renal failure
