- folate is the natural vitamin
- folic acid is the synthetic supplement

What does folic acid deficiency cause? (3)
A
- impaired DNA formation
- results in larger than normal cells
- these abnormalities target the cell for early destruction

What causes folic acid deficiency anemia? (3, 4)
A
- poor nutrition, especially a diet low in leafy vegetables, liver, citrus, dried beans and nuts
- uncommon in US and Canada due to fortified foods - Can also be intestinal malabsorption caused by conditions that affect the gut, such as Crohn’s disease
- Medications can lead to folic acid deficiency (oral contraceptives)

- jaundice
- pallor
- fatigue
- weight loss
- serum Hgb and Hct decreased
- serum folate decreased
