What is an indication? (3)
Medical conditions for which the drug is given
- may be more than one indication
- may be other uses for the drug, ask why would you give this drug and what conditions does it treat?
What is a contraindication? (2)
- condition not to give the drug
- ie. liver disease
- ask, when is it not appropriate or safe to give this drug?
What are relative contraindications? (2)
- risk and benefits are weighed
ask, it is risky to give this drug but what are the risks if we don’t give this drug?
What is a side effect?
- unavoidable response expected at therapeutic dose
What is toxicity?
- detrimental physiological effects from excessive drug dose
- note that it is not always based on excessive drug dose, could be that the patient cannot tolerate it
What is an allergy reaction?
- need to know what reaction (rash vs anaphylaxis)
- can also be a side effect of the medications, not exactly a reaction
what is an idiosyncratic effect?
uncommon response, genetic predisposition
what is a paradoxical effect?
Opposite of intended response
What is nephrotoxic?
- kidney toxicity
What is hepatotoxicity?
liver toxicity
