Week 2: Oxygen Saturation Flashcards
1
Q
What does oxygen saturation also known as? (3)
A
- pulse oximetry
- O2 Sats
- SpO2
2
Q
How does pulse oximetry work?
A
- sensor compare is it ratio of light emitted to light absorbed by haemoglobin and converted into a percentage of SpO2
3
Q
What is the normal range of SpO2? (3)
A
97-99%
- 95-97% is acceptable
- On R/A (always state what the person is breathing)
4
Q
What is the critical value of SpO2?
A
<90%
5
Q
How do you use a pulse oximetry on a patient? (3)
A
- Probe (spring loaded ‘clip’) for finger, toe, earlobe
- most accurate with low oxygen state
- intermittent and continuous monitoring
6
Q
Are pulse oximeters accurate amongst different ethnocultural backgrounds? (3)
A
- no
- Studies show that pulse oximetry is less accurate in pigmented skin
- black, Asian, and Hispanic patients’ oxygen levels were overestimated by pulse oximeters
7
Q
Give an example on how you would document RR, Rhythm, effort, and Sats
A
RR 36, states short of breath, laboured, O2Sat 90% on 3L supplemental oxygen by nasal prongs
