Week 4 - Pain + Awareness Flashcards
What is pain? (2)
- an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage
- it is whatever the experiencing person says it is, existing whenever they say it does
Pain web map and interrelated concepts
What are the impacts of pain to an individual? (6)
- physical
- psychological
- emotional
- social
- spiritual
and financial consequences
What does unrelieved pain cause for families? (3)
- slows recovery
- creates burden for family
- increases cost to the system
What is pain the leading cause of? (3)
- most common reason people seek health care
- chronic pain is the most common cause of long-term disability
major cause of absenteeism, underemployment, and unemployment
Will the number of people who need treatment for pain rise as the population ages?
yes
What is pain on a pathological note? (3)
- normal physiological response to tissue injury
- symptom of pathology associated with a disease process
- result of an alteration of the somatosensory system
Pain is ____.
protective
Why is pain often referred to as the 6th vital sign?
- it tells us that something is wrong
What are the 4 neurological processes that pain is felt?
- Transduction
- Transmission
- Perception
- Modulation
What occurs in transduction? (2)
- noxious stimuli cause cell damage with the release of sensitizing chemicals
- these substances activate nociceptors and lead to generation of action potential
Which sensitizing chemicals are released in transduction? (5)
- Prostaglandins
- Bradykinin
- Serotonin
- Substance P
- Histamine
What occurs in transmission? (4)
- Action potential continues from:
1. site of injury to spinal cord
2. spinal cord to brain stem and thalamus
3. Thalamus to cortez for processing
What are the 2 types of fibers? are they fast or slow? Why?
A fibers - fast bc myelinated
B fibers - slow, burning transmission bc unmyelinated
What occurs in perception?
- conscious experience of pain
ie. I understand this stimulus is painful
