Week 6 - Wound Healing Flashcards
1
Q
What is primary intention healing?
A
- Incision with blood clot
- Edges approximated with suture
- Fine scar
anatomically back to the way it was
2
Q
What is secondary intention? (3)
A
- Irregular, large wound with blood clot
- granulation tissue fills in wound
- Large scar
ie bedsore
3
Q
What is tertiary intention?
A
- Contaminated wound
- Granulation tissue
- Delayed closure with suture
opened temporarily to get it clean, then stitched
4
Q
What is wound healing?
A
- inflammatory response is involved with healing wounds
5
Q
What are partial-thickness wounds?
A
damage to the epidermis and upper dermal layers
6
Q
How are partial thickness wounds healed? (3)
A
Re-epithelization
- production of new skin cells by undamaged dermal layer
- occurs in 5-7 days (hydrated, well-oxygenated, few microorganisms)
7
Q
What are full thickness wounds?
A
Damage extends to lower lays of dermis and subcutaneous tissue
8
Q
How are full thickness wounds healed? (2)
A
Granulation - gap in tissue filled by scar tissue
Contraction - Gap in tissue fibroblasts pull wound edges inward (maturation)
