One can develop tolerance with prolonged opioid use. What is tolerance? (3)
- no longer effective as it once was
- develops to some pharmacologic effect but not to others
- euphoria, resp. depressions, nausea
No tolerance develops to what pharmacologic effect? (2)
- constipation
- constricted pupils
What is physical dependence? (2)
- if you stopped, you would go through withdrawal
- long term use produces physical dependence
With physical dependence, one can develop acute abstinence syndrome. What is that? (2)
- withdrawal that can last up to 10 days
- unpleasant but not dangerous
Why is addiction different than dependence?
- it is psychological
What is addiction? (2)
- a compulsive, abnormal dependence on a substance (alc, cocaine, opioids, or tobacco) or on a behaviour (gambling, internet, or pornography)
- dependence typically has adverse psych, physical, economic, social, or legal ramifications
What are substance-induced disorders?
- temporary and reversible caused by immediate use of substance and the immediate effect that occurs when substance is stopped
What is substance use disorder? (3)
- as a result from continued, frequent use of a substance
- combines abuse and dependence
- direct effects of the substance, include cognitive, behavioural, and physiological physical symptoms
Substance Use Disorder contains which 3 symptoms?
- craving
- tolerance
- withdrawal
