Week 11 - Respiratory and Metabolic Alkalosis Flashcards
What is respiratory alkalosis?
- too little carbonic acid (too little CO2)
ie. getting rid of CO2 quickly
What is the cause of respiratory alkalosis?
Often hyperventilation (breathing out to much CO2)
IE Anxiety, fear, pulmonary embolism
How is respiratory alkalosis treated?
FIX what is causing hyperventilation
How is respiratory alkalosis corrected?
- excreting bicarbonate in urine
but if you have anxiety/fear it may not get to this
- Idk why there is no compensation
What is metabolic alkalosis?
- too little acid or too much bicarbonate
What is the cause of metabolic alkalosis? (2)
- intake of antacids
- prolonged vomiting
How is metabolic alkalosis compensated for?
- By respiratory system through hypoventilation (hold onto CO2)
note it kicks in right away
How is metabolic alkalosis corrected? (2)
- By the kidneys
- excretes bicarbonate through urine
What are the CVS signs and symptoms of alkalosis? (2)
- increased HR
- normal or low BP
also hypokalemia
What are the CNS signs and symptoms of alkalosis? (3)
- Increased activity
- anxiety, irritability, seizures
- paresthesias
What are the neuromuscular signs and symptoms of alkalosis? (3)
- Hyperreflexia
- Muscle cramping and twitching
- skeletal muscle weakness
What are the respiratory signs and symptoms of alkalosis? (2)
- Hyperventilation is the CAUSE in respiratory alkalosis
- Hypoventilation is the respiratory compensation in metabolic alkalosis
