- they act as a competitive inhibitor of acetylcholine

- wide range of parasympathetic/ ‘rest and digest’ effects

- increase heart rate
- increased heart conduction
- reduced smooth muscle tone in resp tract
- reduced secretions from glands in reap and GI tracts
