- nitrates are converted into NO
- NO increases cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)
- this reduces intra-cellular Ca2+ in vascular smooth muscle cells
- this causes venous and arterial vasodilation
- this reduces cardiac preload and left ventricular filling
