AMIODARONE Flashcards
1
Q
Drug class
A
anti-dysrhythmics
2
Q
How does it work? (2)
A
- blocks sodium, calcium and potassium channels in myocardial cells
- antagonises alpha and beta cells in the heart
3
Q
What effect does amiodarone have on the body? (4)
A
- reduces spontaneous depolarisation
- slows downs conduction
- increases resistance to depolarisation - AV node
- consequently reducing ventricular rate
4
Q
How does amiodarone work in SVT? (2)
A
- breaks a self-pertuating circuit that includes the AV node
- this restores sinus rhythm
5
Q
Indications
A
tachyarrythmias
6
Q
Contra-indications (3)
A
- bp
- severe hypotension - heart
- heart block - thyroid
- active thyroid disease
7
Q
Side effects (6)
A
- bp
– hypotension during IV infusion
- lungs
- pneumonitis - heart
- bradycardia
- AV block
- liver
- hepatits - skin
- photosensitivity
- grey colour
- thyroid abnormalities
- due iodine content
- amIODarone -iodine is in the name
8
Q
Interactions (3) and what does it cause? (4)
A
- digoxin
- verapamil
- diltiazem
-increases plasma concentration
causes
- bradycardia
- AV block
- heart block
9
Q
Elimination (2)
A
- hepatic metabolism
