RANITIDINE Flashcards
1
Q
drug class
A
H2 receptor antagonist
2
Q
how does it work? (6)
A
- reduces gastric acid secretion
- the proton pump is regulated by histamine
- histamine is released by local paracrine cells
- histamine then binds to H2 receptors on the gastric parietal cell
- this activates the proton pump
- Ranitdine binds to H2 receptor preventing this action
3
Q
How does the proton pump work and what does it do? (3)
A
- it produces gastric acid
- by secreting H+ into the stomach lumen
- this is in exchange for drawing K+ into the cell
4
Q
Which messenger system activates the proton pump?
A
second messenger sysetm
5
Q
Do H2 receptor antagonists completely suppress gastric acid production?
A
no
6
