METRONIDAZOLE Flashcards
1
Q
Drug class
A
anaerobic antimicrobial
2
Q
How does it work? (6)
A
- works on anaerobic bacteria
- enters bacterial cells via diffusion
- metronidazole is reduced to nitrous free radical
- this free radical binds to DNA
- this reduces synthesis
- and causes cell death
3
Q
Indications and give examples of them (5)
A
- antibiotic associated colitis
- c.diff - oral infections
- aspiration pneumonia
- surgical and gynaecological infections
- gram -ve anaerobes
5. protozoal infections
4
Q
Conta-indications (2)
A
- severe liver disease - cytochrome P450 enzymes
2. alcohol
5
Q
Side effects (5)
A
- GI upset - nausea and vomitting
- hypersensitivity reactions
- neuropathy - peripheral and optic
- encephalopathy
- seizures
6
Q
Interactions (give examples) (3)
A
- cytochrome P450 enzymes - warfarin and phenytoin
- cytochrome P450 inducers
- Lithium - increases toxicity
7
Q
Eliminations
A
mainly urine
some faeces
