CARBAMEZEPINE Flashcards
1
Q
Drug class
A
anti-convulsant
2
Q
How does it work? (4)
A
- inhibits neuronal sodium channels
- inhibits the spread of seizure activity
- in epilepsy - blocks synaptic transmission
- in the trigemimal nucleus - reduces electrical kindling in the temporal lobe and limbic system
- this stabilises mood in bipolar disease
3
Q
Indications (3)
A
- bipolar
- epilepsy
- trigeminal neuralgia
4
Q
Contra-indications (4)
A
- in utero
- neural tube defects - pregnancy in epileptics
- anti-epileptic hypersensitivity syndrome
- hepatic, renal or cardiac disease
- toxicity
5
Q
Side effects (9)
A
- GI upset
- neurological effects
- dizziness
- ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
- hypersensitivity
- anti-epileptic hypersensitivity syndrome
- skin reactions
- Steven Johnson’s - fever
- lymphadenopathy
- oedema
- anti-diuretic effect - hyponaetremia
- anti-diuretic effect
6
Q
Interactions (3)
A
- drugs metabolised by cytochrome P450
- induces this enzyme
- reduces efficacy of these drugs
e. g. warfarin, progesterone and oestrogen
2. cytochrome P450 inhibitors
- increases concentration and adverse effects
e. g. macrolides
3. anti-epileptic drugs
- reduces efficacy
7
Q
Elimination
A
- urine
