- is a stimulant
- it increases water and electrolyte secretion from colonic mucosa
- this increases colonic content
- and stimulates peristalsis

- senna is metabolised by bacteria in the intestine
- this produces metabolites
- these metabolites have a direct action on the enteric nervous system
