Respiratory 9 Flashcards
What is Tidal Volume?
The of air inhaled and exhaled in one breath in a resting condition
What is average tidal volume?
500 mL
What is Total or minute ventilation?
The amount of air that is exchanged within a rate time (a minute)
How can Total Ventilation be calculated?
By multiplying the tidal volume by respiration frequency
Is all the volume of air inhaled available for gas exchange? and Why?
No, because there is anatomical dead space
What is the difference between Total ventilation and Alveolar ventilation?
Alveolar ventilation only takes into account the air that is available for gas exchange in the alveoli
How can Alveolar ventilation be calculated?
first subtract 0.15mL from 0.5mL to account of alveolar dead space and then multiply then number by the respirations a minute
What is the volume of the conducting pathways?
150 mL
How many mL of air enter the respiratory zone during inhalation?
350 mL
What are the three types of breathing?
- Normal quiet breathing
- Shallow and fast
- Deep and slow
How does Shallow and Fast breathing affect Dead Space ventilation and Alveolar ventilation?
It causes dead space ventilation to increase and alveolar ventilation to decrease sometimes to 0
How does shallow and fast breathing affect the Tidal Volume?
It decreases the Tidal volume
How does Deep and Shallow Breathing affect dead space ventilation and alveolar ventilation?
It causes Dead Space ventilation to decrease and alveolar ventilation to increase
How does Deep and Shallow breathing affect Tidal volume?
Deep and Shallow breathing increased Tidal Volume
