Respiratory 26 Flashcards
What is Anemia?
The reduction in the amount of Hb in the blood
What is Polycythemia?
An increase of HB amount in the blood or reduction of blood volume that increases Hb concentration
What condition is characterized by low hemoglobin?
Anemia
How does Carbon monoxide affect hemoglobin?
It has a very high affinity for hemoglobin so it will tend to bind to hemoglobin quite tightly and displace the oxygen that is present and bound to hemoglobin and makes the curve shift to the left where unloading of O2 occurs
What conformation change do carbon monoxide do to hemoglobin?
It will cause the few molecules of oxygen to be more tightly attached to the hemoglobin
What does the shift left caused by carbon monoxide mean?
That there will be less oxygen delivered to the peripheral tissue because even less PO2 saturation in the peripheral tissues are required to unbind oxygen
