13b Flashcards
What are the four components of Bile?
- Water
- Bile salts
- Bilirubin
- Fats
What do Bile Salts do?
Solubilize water insoluble fats
What is Bilirubin?
A hemoglobin breakdown product
What fats are found in the bile?
Cholesterol and lecithin
What causes the gallbladder to fill up?
The sphincter of oddi being closed
What happens to bile while in the gallbladder?
NaCl is absorbed from it, making it more concentrated
What happens to the gallbladder in response to CCK?
The gallbladder contracts allowing bile to be secreted into the duodenum
What phase response it the contraction of the gallbladder?
An intestinal phase response
What causes CCK to be release from the SI?
High levels of fatty acids
What are the three types of intestinal secretions?
- Water/electrolytes
- Mucus
- Enzymes
What do the water and electrolytes in intestinal secretions do?
Maintains fluidity of intestinal contents
What does the Mucus of intestinal components do?
Lubrication and protections
What do the enzymes of intestinal components do?
Aid digestion
What is the main driving force for water secretion in the small intestine?
Osmosis
What are intestinal crypts?
Invaginations near the villi of intestines
