Respiratory 12 Flashcards
What is the Intrapleural pressue?
The pressure that is inside the pleura
What is the Transpulmonary pressure derived from?
The difference in alveolar pressure minus the intrapleural pressure
What is the Intrapleural pressure?
The pressure that is inside the intrapleural space when we find the 10mL volume of fluid
What does the Intrapleural space act as for alveoli?
A vacuum
What is the sign of the intrapleural pressure and why?
It is always negative because it is always subatomic
What would cause the lungs to collapse?
The intrapleural pressure being the same as the alveolar pressure
What is the Alveolar Pressure?
The pressure of the air inside the alveoli
Why is alveolar pressure a dynamic property?
Because the flow is driven from the difference between the alveolar pressure and the atmospheric pressure
What happens when the alveolar pressure is equal to the atmospheric pressure?
The will not be any airflow
What kind of pressure is the transpulmonary pressure?
A static pressure
What is the transpulmonary pressure dependant on?
The intrapleural pressure
What is the transpulmonary pressure?
The difference in pressure generated between the alveolar pressure and the intrapleural pressure
What is the sign of the intrapleural pressure always?
It is always negative
What is the transpulmonary pressure involved in?
Determining lung volume
What does Alveolar pressure determine?
Airflow
