Renal Physl 15 Flashcards
What is Hypokalemia?
The concentration of potassium inside the cell is higher than the concentration outside the cell
What is Hyperkalemia?
When potassium levels increase in the extracellular fluid
What are the symptoms of Hypokalemia?
- Muscle weakness
* Dysfunction of respiratory and cardiac muscle
What are the symptoms of Hyperkalemia?
Initial increase in excitability followed by depression do to impaired repolarization
What can cause dysfunction in potassium levels?
Renal or GI dysfunction
What can cause excessive potassium loss in urine?
Diuretic drugs
What hormone regulates potassium balance?
Aldosterone
What does high potassium stimulate release of from the adrenal cortex?
Stimulates the release of aldosterone
What part of the nephron does aldosterone work at?
The distal tubule
How does aldosterone affect potassium concentration?
It acts at the distal tubule to stimulate the Na-K-ATPase which enhances potassium excretion
