The Guideline when a DNR order is in place
1-When personnel have been informed of the existence of a DNRC, they shall obtain the DNRC from the patient, family member or caregiver at the scene.
2-The Captain shall review and ensure the DNRC is valid by the presence of the unique serial number and by completion of all the required fields — Patients name, Tick box has been checked to identify that one of the conditions has been met, A signature by physician or nurse, the date the form was signed
3-Personnel shall perform a patient assessment and confirm the physical condition of the patient.
4-If the DNRC is valid, personnel shall provide interventions or therapies considered necessary to provide comfort (palliative) care or alleviate pain. This may include but is not limited to the provision of oropharyngeal suctioning and oxygen.
5-Personnel shall obtain information regarding patient’s medical history — Date of Birth, Age, Address
6-Personnel shall assist responding ambulance personnel and emergency services as required.
7-Upon returning to the station, the Captain in charge will fully document the event in the remarks section of the MAR and document the unique serial number of the DRNC.
8- In the unlikely event where a valid DNRC is not present and the patient’s family or caregiver state that the patient has a DNRC and they refuse you access to the patient, remain on scene until ambulance arrives to transfer care.
