What is the purpose of the Confined Space Responses SOG?
The purpose of the SOG is to provide guidelines sand procedures for Confined Space Rescue Operations for 1st arriving apparatus. These guidelines are to ensure that Confined Space Incidents and training are conducted in a safe and efficient manner.
Define Atmospheric Hazard?
1-Acculmination of flammable, combustible or explosive agents
2-An oxygen content in the atmosphere that is less than 19.5 per cent or more than 23 per cent by volume, or
3-The accumulation of atmospheric contaminants, including gases, vapours, fumes, dusts or mists, that could
– result in acute health effects that pose an immediate threat to life, or
–interfere with a person’s ability to escape unaided from a confined space
What is the normal response for a Confined Space Call?
TR202, A202, AL201, DC, and HM204 will be dispatched along with the first responding apparatus to any calls with the potential of being a confined space emergency.
What is the best Approach to a Confined Space Call?
1-Come in from a safe direction
2-Position apparatus no closed than 30m from the space you want the barrier tape to extend 30m
3-Position apparatus Safely from the incident if vehicle engine is running
4-Approach with PPE appropriate for the site (SCBA must be worn for spaces that contain or have the potential to contain hazardous atmospheres)
What should the Incident Commander do?(list 7)
1-Establish command
2-Provide and/or Obtain a brief incident report
3-Determine command location and initial staging area
4-Make incident action assignments
5-Ensure police and ambulance reponse
6-Notification of MOL (after patient transported)
7-Notification Joint Health and Safety (after patient transport)
List some possible information sources used when gathering info?
workers, supervisors, witnesses, attendant, permits, site safety plan, and MSDS
List the questions that could be asked when gathering information. (list 8)
1-Is there an immediate hazard present to rescuers?
2-What is the nature of the problem?
3-How many victims and what is their location?
4-How long has the victim been down?
5-What work was being done?
6-What type of products are stored in this space?
7-What known hazards are present (atmospheric, chemicals, temperature extremes, energy sources, engulfment potential)?
8-Obtain blueprints, maps, (confined space permits) or have site personnel draw a sketch of the site including entry and egress locations
How should the Hot Zone at a Confined space incident be defined?
The Rescue Zone - use barrier tape to create a rescue zone of approximately 100 feet (30m) perimeter around (double row of barrier tape)
How should the Work Zone be identified?
Use barrier tape to create a larger work zone about 100ft around the space (single row barrier tape)
Describe the procedures involved in evacuation.
1-Surfave victims - take control of care and treatment of injured surface victims
2-Trapped victims - provide fresh air and self-resce assistance when appropriate
3-Untrained resources - direct would-be rescuers of unsafe areas
4-Bystannders- remove spectators from rescue and work zones
5-Set-up decontamination as necessary using Haz-Mat team
6-Assist Specialty Teams in support functions
