Define Unprotected Exposure (3)
1-Tissue under skin (i.e. a bite where skin is broken)
2-Body fluid in contact with non-intact skin (cut, chapped or abraded skin)
3-Body fluid in contact with mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth, lungs)
Define Significant Exposure.
Any unprotected exposure with an agent that may cause illness or disease (i.e. needle stick injury, mucous membranes, failure of protective equipment)
List several High Risk Sources
- Known HIV, HCV, HBV positive
- IV drug / alcohol abuser
- Homeless population
- Multiple sexual partners
- Sex worker
- Immigrant from high endemic area (i.e. Africa) or recent travel
- Source had blood transfusion, blood product, or organ transplant between 1979-1985
- Same-sex, sexual activity
- Current or recent imprisonment
- Infants born to HIV infected women
Regarding exposure to an infectious substance all personnel shall: (list 3)
1-report a possible unprotected exposure to their immediate supervisor
2-seek immediate medical care if required
3-complete a Workplace Injury/Illness Report (WIIR)
Regarding exposure to an infectious substance the immediate supervisor shall…….
notify the on-duty Designated Officer (through Communications) and the appropriate District/Platoon/Division Chief, as soon as possible when a significant exposure occurs
What is the responsibility of the DC, PC, DivC(2)
1-Shall coordinate transportation of affected personnel who may need medical care
2-Shall provide any other information the Designated Officer may need to assess the incident
